Not only does it take excellent educational programs to maintain tax-exempt status as an educational institution, but it also requires IRS precision. Whether you're in charge of a K-12 school, a charter school, or a higher education institution, it is imperative that you file your Form 990 on time.

Mandated E-Filing for Educational Organizations

As mandated by the Taxpayer First Act, all educational institutions are now mandated to file their annual tax returns electronically. Paper filing is now obsolete and will be rejected by the IRS. This can result in additional fees and/or revocation of your tax-exempt status if not done for three consecutive years.

Which Form Does Your School Need?

The IRS bases your filing requirement on gross receipts and total assets:

Essential: Schedule E (Schools)

If your organization is a private school described in section 170(b)(1)(A)(ii), you must file Schedule E with your Form 990 or 990-EZ. Schedule E confirms your compliance with racially nondiscriminatory policies in the following areas:

 ●      Student admissions and enrollments.

      Scholarship and loan schemes.

      Athletic and extracurricular activities.

Our e-filing system has automated schedules based on your organization’s profile to ensure that all necessary schedules are attached.
